CHAPTER 9

ANYA

She’s been such an idiot! There’s no other way to put that, she’s been stupid and she knows it. No one else needs to know.

Except no matter where she goes, Anya feels like everyone does know anyway. Somehow. It’s ridiculous, and she gets it, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

Why had she run away?

It had been just a kiss. The kind that still spreads wonderful warmth in her stomach as she thinks back to that night. She hadn’t been kissed like that for so long, if ever. Ginger had tasted sugary and warm, just like her smiles look.

How can someone even be like that?

She had made her feel so good. A little twitchy, yes, but in the best way ever. She likes that feeling. She wants to experience it again.

But when Ginger had spoken about her desires, her thoughts, Anya couldn’t have helped but feel like she was only betraying both of them by being right there. She shouldn’t have agreed to any of this. There had never been just pure friendship between the two of them. How stupid can a grown woman be?

Those kinds of thoughts don’t leave Anya even when she tries to shake them off. She rushes to the mall in the early afternoon, realizing that while she had bought a small gift to Felix, it wouldn’t be enough for the young boy. And she needs to find something better. A lot better. And Alex, she’s completely forgotten Alex.

She checks the time on her phone. The day is already escaping from her, and the only things she can think of are the kisses and the party Ginger had invited her to. She had said it was her friend’s party, there would be plenty of people.

At the moment, it had sounded like a great idea. Anya had wanted to just spend more time with the other woman, and no it hadn’t exactly changed. She still wants that.

But she knows Ginger might not. And she can’t blame the woman for that.

She had really fucked it all up, hadn’t she?

”Hello! Can I help you with something?” a young man asks as she enters another store.

Anya shakes her head, tells him that she’s just looking around, and luckily he leaves her alone. For now. If only her thoughts would leave her alone that easy as well.

She should maybe text Ginger. Apologize for another time and ask whether they could still be friends. As if they could be friends. But there aren’t many people she would call friends around here. Many friendly faces, sure, but no friends.

She doesn’t even realize her gaze had stopped, until the man joins her and begins to talk about a pair of earrings she had stared at for too long. Tiny gingerbread men.

”They’re adorable, aren’t they?” he hums so proudly she could imagine that he’s made them with his own fingers.

”Though, I don’t think you could pull them off, just saying. No offense.”

”None taken,” Anya manages a soft laugh.

”I wasn’t thinking about them for myself, just… for someone I know.
